Herpes mammilitis is a syndrome. The causative agent is identical with Allerton type of virus. It causes gangrene of the udder skin. This is a new disease reported in Europe and America. It has been diagnosed but not confirmed in exotic cattle breeds. It is a disease of adult dairy cows. It is a disease of milking dairy cows. Milking machine is the vector. It affects about 50% of milking cows within 10 days. It makes milking difficult and it is a devastating disease. Usually, both quarters are affected. There is a definite line between gangrene and normal tissues. Secondary mastitis occurs up to 25% of affected cattle in any outbreak. Affected cows are slaughtered because they don’t produce milk again.
